Who Was Franz Kafka?

Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was a German-speaking Bohemian writer from Prague (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now the Czech Republic). He is widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, known for his absurdist, existential, and often nightmarish depictions of modern life. His works explore themes like alienation, anxiety, powerlessness, and the absurdity of bureaucracy so much that the term “Kafkaesque” is used to describe similar situations in real life and literature.

Franz Kafka’s Books

Most of Kafka’s works were published posthumously by his friend Max Brod, despite Kafka’s request that to destroy them after his death. Novels (all unfinished):

  • The Trial (Der Prozess): A man is arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority.
  • The Castle (Das Schloss): A land surveyor struggles to gain access to mysterious castle officials.
  • Amerika (also known as The Man Who Disappeared): Follows a young European immigrant navigating a surreal version of America.

Notable Short Stories and Novellas:

  • The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung): A traveling salesman wakes up transformed into a giant insect.
  • In the Penal Colony: A haunting depiction of justice and punishment.
  • The Hunger Artist: A story about art, suffering, and misunderstanding.
  • The Judgment: Explores family, guilt, and authority.
  • Before the Law: A parable found in The Trial; often studied independently.
