Jack Kerouac’s life

Growing up, Jack Kerouac developed into a promising baseball and especially American football player. So, he received an athletic scholarship to study for free at Columbia University in New York. There, he first came into contact with several of the later members of the literary Beat Generation. Among them, were Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs. Later, he dropped out and returned to his hometown of Lowell. There, he began working as the sports editor of the Lowell Sun newspaper. In 1942, he worked on merchant ships, making long voyages, and the following year, he volunteered for the US Navy.

The return from England

When he returned from England, Kerouac became closely associated with Lucien Carr and Allen Ginsberg, then students at Columbia University. Also, with the writer William S. Burroughs as well as with Neal Cassady. At that time, in a conversation with the writer John Clellon Holmes, he described his generation as mentally tired of life and the world. And, their characteristic was a feeling of “beatness”, essentially introducing the term Beat Generation.

The two marriages

He married Eddie Parker in 1944, shortly after Lucien Carr was imprisoned for murder. for which Kerouac was even considered an accomplice. His marriage lasted only a few months. But, he divorced in 1945 and the same year coincided with the death of his father. Shortly after his death, Kerouac began writing his first novel, The Town and the City, which was published in 1950. In 1949 he made his first trip from New England to San Francisco, along with Neal Cassady and Cassady’s ex-wife. Over the next decade, Kerouac traveled nearly all over America and Mexico. He sometimes hitched a ride with Cassady and sometimes hitchhiked. The wandering would form the basis of his famous novel “On the Road”.

In 1950 he married his second wife, Joan Haverty. The following years were a particularly creative and productive period for Kerouac. He began to write furiously his well-known novels. Some of them were “On the Road”, “Visions of Cody”, “Dr. Sax “, “Maggie Cassidy”, “The Subterraneans” and others work.
