The DIY project of snowy pine cones is one of the easiest DIY Christmas decorations projects and its outcome will surprise you with its beauty and usefulness.
After years of crafting, I separate DIY projects into three categories: easy and useful, beautiful but so much wasting time, and “so you” in order to be neglected, yet difficult.
In previous years, I have made many DIY Christmas ornaments and decorations. Some of them have survived, and some were donated, but a lot of them didn’t make it. So, this year I decided to spend my time on a project that will be easy, practical, and useful.
Our Christmas tree needed more “fillers” in order to look richer. And, natural elements would match perfectly with our burlap garland. Thus, I remembered a dozen of pine cones that I gathered the previous year and I hadn’t decided to use them in other projects. They would look perfect on our Christmas tree near burlap. The next step was to transform them into natural Christmas ornaments.
DIY Snowy Pine Cones • steps
- To wash and debug the pine cones, I put them in hot water and vinegar for 30 minutes. I left them dry well for a couple of days. Then, I washed them again with water and let them dry and fully open for a week. Instead of this procedure, you can put them in the oven for 30 minutes at a low temperature. I have never tried this but I know blogger friends that did it.
- Using white acrylic paint and a big brush, I painted the edges. The idea of dipping the edges in the paint proved not so satisfying in the result.
- I chose thin decorative wire in order to attach them to the tree branches, instead of using ribbons, because I wanted them to look completely natural.
I think that this was the easiest, most affordable, and most useful DIY Christmas project I’ve ever made. And, it looks fabulous and so harmonious on the Christmas tree. What do you think?
