What is macrame?

Macrame isn’t something new for me. Back in the late ’80s, my mother was making macrame lampshades, pot hangers, and door curtains. She was teaching macrame knots and when practicing at home, we were learning from her. I remember myself as a kid knitting a whole backpack with rope. And, there was a really beautiful macrame lampshade into our kitchen and plant hangers to our balcony.

Macrame is a fascinating textile art that involves creating intricate designs using knots. Crafters and artists use this technique to make everything from impressive wall hangings above the bed to more practical items like bags, belts, or even rugs.

The beauty of macrame lies in its simplicity: you only need your hands and a few inexpensive supplies. The basic shape and function of a macrame piece come from the knots, which can be made with various techniques. Interestingly, sailors played a role in spreading macrame throughout Europe during long voyages, creating items like hammocks, hats, bracelets, etc.

Basic macrame knots

Making a Macrame wall hanging is a delightful project, and it’s easier than you might think. Except for the materials, it’s important to understand the basic knots like the Lark’s Head Knot, Square Knot, and Double Half Hitch Knot.

Lark’s Head Knot

The Lark’s Head Knot is a fundamental macrame knot that serves as a starting point for many projects. It’s simple to create and versatile and it is commonly used for attaching cords to a base, creating loops for hanging, or starting more complex patterns.

To make it, just fold your cord in half, place the folded end over the dowel or ring, pass the loose ends of the cord through the loop created by the folded end, and pull the loose ends down to tighten the knot.

The easiest DIY macrame wall hanging

Among macrame wall hangings, I distinguished this easy wall-hanging project that is so cool, despite its simplicity. And, I tried it immediately because it’s not difficult to find its material anyway. Cotton rope, long driftwood, scissors, and acrylic painting and brushes, if you want to add colorful details.

Decide the length of your desired macrame and cut the rope into many equal pieces. Tie the pieces on the driftwood by making basic Lark’s head knots. Make many of them to reach your desired width.

You can also make colorful details with acrylic paints like stripes on the edges of the wood, or you can leave it as it is for a completely natural look. And, this simple wall-hanging macrame is ready! The small one is made by our little crafter! What do you think? Aren’t they beautiful?
