The “Artist of the week” contest continues its interesting route and more talented artists are revealed. The winner of the sixth week (VI) is a gifted artist from Florida, Judy Hall-Folde with her stunning winning work “The other side of daisy“. Judy is experimenting in many artistic fields, but mostly in photography, always seeking to capture of beauty and perfection in every theme of her work. So, today, I’m very happy to present the interview with artist Judy Hall-Folde.

Interview with artist Judy Hall-Folde

FAWbyJWP. Would you like to tell us a few words about yourself and your life as an artist for an introduction? What do you think played a significant role to become an artist?

Judy. I guess I had the soul of an artist as a toddler building cities in my sandbox! I was always drawing and doodling; took a few art classes in high school; oil painting in college along with the required art history classes. Life got in the way and art took a back seat to family and work. Now retired, I have become addicted to the Nikon DSLR I purchased about 7 years ago. The rest is history. I am honing my photography skills, learning Photoshop tricks, also drawing and painting in between. I am entering into the world of portrait photography to support my addiction to art and help shore up my retirement income and just love every minute of it. My husband agreed to be my assistant and we have a grand time doing this together!

FAWbyJWP. There are a lot of photographers, painters, and artists on the internet and in the market these days, how do you think that your work differs from the rest?

Judy. As I am still experimenting with my art, I don’t yet think I have attained anything I’d call a niche or unique. I’m still working on it, though! I do try NOT to compare what I do with other artists because I feel that our art is the window to the soul which makes every work a personal statement.

Inspiration and “dry” periods

FAWbyJWP. How do you find inspiration and how do you handle the ‘dry’ periods?

Judy. This may sound silly, but everything inspires me. My brain immediately looks for the perfect framing for everything my eyes see. While I might have dry periods due to things that occur in life, my mind is always thinking about art. I lost my Mom two weeks ago and have had a horribly stiff neck and shoulder for a bit longer than that (from the tension they tell me) so I haven’t picked up my camera because of that BUT, my mind is still urging me to get over it and get out there. My Mom loved my images and always shared them with her friends.

FAWbyJWP. Do you believe that the themes you choose to photograph could tell something about your personality and your experiences in life and what would that be?

Judy. I do need to think about themes, don’t I?  Soon I will be working on a theme of moving water, creeks, rivers, waterfalls, etc. Hope I can work magic with my camera as this is going to be a learning curve for me!

Art and internet

FAWbyJWP. The Internet provides endless possibilities for artists in order to get inspiration and also promote their work. But, on the other hand, this endless situation can shallow us all to anonymity. What is your opinion about this easiness of our days that anyone can see anything and publish anything on the web without surpassing any obstacles?

Judy. My attitude about this is probably too casual, but I feel like if someone is so impressed with my art that they steal it, I will feel honored.  In the end, it is still mine. I would love the entire world to become honest, but am also intelligent enough to know that will never happen! With the advent of all the amazing cameras and the internet, it is true that everyone is a photographer – the one saving grace is that everyone doesn’t have the artist’s eye. The internet has provided me with wonderful feedback on my work and that is part of my motivation to keep working!

FAWbyJWP. How would you describe your activity in online communities like FAA or social media networks? Does it play an important role in your sales?

Judy. Online spaces and FB are almost my exclusive sales arena. I am only recently delving into local activities, so I am yet to see how that works.

FAWbyJWP. How do you handle negative or malicious comments?

Judy. So far I guess I have been fortunate in that I haven’t been the recipient of negative or malicious comments. I have seen that happen on FAA and P4M and it saddens me. My philosophy is that those who have to tear someone else down are simply jealous of the work of their target.

Creativity and challenges

FAWbyJWP. What are the most challenges in being creative and an artist?

Judy. The most challenging in being creative and an artist is balancing art time and family/responsibility time. I don’t know about other artists, but if I could get away with it, I’d be shooting, drawing, painting, and editing ALL the time my house has suffered because of this, and so has my husband – he has been very patient.

FAWbyJWP. Can art change someone’s life in a better way?

Judy.  They say “a picture is worth 1000 words.” The Bible speaks to the need of the person who is reading it. I believe art conveys a message, feeling, or emotion to those who view it.  It is their perception and probably is perceived according to what they are experiencing at the moment, so a resounding YES, I do believe art can change someone’s life in a good or better way!

Judy is currently living in Spring Hill Florida. You can find Judy and her beautiful work on her website.
