Who is Coco Chanel?
Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883 in France and took her name from the nurse who brought her to life. Her mother died when she was still young. And, her father, an insignificant street vendor, abandoned her along with his four other children. The little girl ended up in an orphanage. Later, she worked as a maid in exchange for her education.
In her twenties, she worked as a tailor’s apprentice. At night she sang in dance clubs, where she acquired the nickname, Coco. She started a hat shop in 1909 and soon her simple hats became popular. The hats of this period used to be bulky, with feathers and ornaments. She also started creating relaxed clothes, ideal for everyday sports. She was also influenced by yachting, she made nautical jackets, swimwear, berets, nautical trousers, and blouses.
During World War I, most women were forced – in the absence of men – to do heavy work. It was when Chanel trousers became the norm. Even the aristocrats who had remained in Paris conformed to the new fashion. Her more tremendous success comes with the launch of Chanel No5 perfume. The number 5 was Coco Chanel’s lucky number. This perfume kept her reputation alive in the difficult times ahead to come. A few years later, she introduced the knitted cardigan and the “little black dress“, which became a women’s wardrobe staple.
