Today, I’m very happy to present the interview with photographer Daniel Furon, winner of the “Artist of the week” contest, and his award-winning work “Tree Fern in the Stairs“.

Daniel Furon is a very talented commercial photographer from France, currently living in San Francisco. His wonderful portfolio covers a lot of regions and subjects including cityscapes, landscapes, environmental images, portraits, people in action, magazine cover work, nature, and represents a lifetime of work.

Interview with photographer Daniel Furon

FAWbyJWP. Would you like to tell us a few words about your winning artwork for the introduction?

Daniel. This staircase is one of several inside a line of 5 or 6 hi-rises called Embarcadero Center (for shopping and offices), San Francisco. Built in the seventies by John Portman.

FAWbyJWP. What do you think played a significant role in your decision to choose photography as a means of creation and expose your work?

Daniel. My first encounter with the photo world: While I was studying graphic arts and art history in Paris, a girlfriend asked me to escort her to a photo studio – because she was a little bit wary of going by herself. In fact, it proved to be a lot of animation in a big space where a winter mountain was being built by a crew of set builders and model makers, an art director and other employees from an ad agency and their client, 15 girls (and my friend) being pampered by hair and makeup artists and a stylist. The photographer was the prime contractor and I was amazed by the teamwork. Later, when I was back from the army, I worked my way to become an advertising photographer.

FAWbyJWP. Does your very intriguing portfolio have many different topics? Which things do you enjoy photographing most and why?

Daniel. I’m very available to my environment (when on my own): wilderness, studio, streets whatever.

FAWbyJWP. Are there any photographers and artists that influenced you? How do you believe this is reflected in your work?

Daniel. Many photographers from different times and places. I remember mainly photos.

FAWbyJWP. Is there any message or idea you want to share through your art?

Daniel. Yes.

Art, internet, and social media

FAWbyJWP. There are so many photographs and artworks on the internet nowadays. How do you think that your work differs from the rest artists?

Daniel. Each work is unique, Ioanna – we might have no competitors! To become famous is another trip some people might find exhausting, though.

FAWbyJWP. How would you describe your activity in online communities like FAA or social media networks? Does it play an important role in your sales?

Daniel. No big deals with FAA, just a few sales. I’m mainly interested in discovering what is of common interest.

FAWbyJWP. What motivates you to continue taking pictures?

Daniel. I’m a commercial photographer now in San Francisco and enjoy rendering my environment.

FAWbyJWP. What is the best advice you ever heard for your work or your life as an artist?

Daniel. Keep going, Man.
