Interview with artist Miro Gradinscak

Today I’m happy to share with you the interview of Miro Gradinscak, the other winner in the second contest for the “Artist of the week”, and present his winning drawing “Don’t Panic”.

Miro is a textile designer and a talented self-taught artist from Croatia, whose drawings I think belong in this awesome category of “How can he do this?” They are so detailed, vivid, and perfect that at the first sight you think they are photographs – or, at least I thought it. And, then you read under the title the word drawing and you say, “Wow! That’s amazing!”.

Interview with artist Miro Gradinscak

FAWbyJWP. Would you like to tell us a few words about yourself and your life as an artist for the introduction?

Miro. I come from Varazdin, a small town in the beautiful country of Croatia in Europe. I’m a textile designer and drawing is my hobby. I’m a self-taught artist and I draw from an early age. However, for various reasons, I didn’t draw the last few years, but I’m glad that I started again.

FAWbyJWP. What do you think played a significant role in your decision to become an artist and expose your work?

Miro. My father loved to paint and next to him, watching his work, I fell in love with art.

FAWbyJWP. Can you explain how and why you choose the themes and the mediums you use?

Miro. As I said, I started drawing very early, about 8 or 9 years old. I was drawing all sorts of things and the most, as I remember, cowboys and Indians. In high school, I saw a great drawing of some famous singer, and that played a significant role in my decision to do portraits. I love animals and lately quite often draw them. I’m obsessed with graphite and it’s the medium with which I love to work most. I like painting. A few years ago I tried to do something in this medium, but I wasn’t satisfied. It didn’t look realistic enough and that’s why I gave up. I’m very self-critical.

Art, internet, and social media

FAWbyJWP. How do you think that your work differs from the rest artists, who are so many here on FAA, but also on the internet and in the market?

Miro. Honestly, I don’t bother with it. I draw because I love it, I have my own style and I want to show it. My wish is that more people see my artwork. If someone likes my portraits … ok, great … if not, doesn’t matter, ok again.

FAWbyJWP. What are your goals this year, regarding the promotion of your work?

Miro. Goals of this year? I don’t know, I will certainly continue to draw. I’d like to have at least one solo exhibition and I hope that I will sell some of the work on FAA.

FAWbyJWP. If you could choose any work of art – classic or contemporary – that inspired you most, what would you pick and why?

Miro. Congratulations to contemporary art, but I’ve always admired the works of classical masters…

FAWbyJWP. Do you believe that art of any kind could give answers to everyday problems? Can make the world better? Or, all is about art for art and art for decoration?

Miro. On this question I can answer with one similar example from my profession… suit doesn’t make the man but it seems more beautiful, more attractive, more polite…
