kallithea • prespes • greece
Kallithea is one of the beautiful, but unknown villages in the greek region of Prespes. Its name means nice view, as it is located high in the slopes of the mountain Varnouda; that is provide to the village a superb view to Prespes lakes.
Varnouda mountain always played an important role to locals’ life and economy. In its green valleys local people send their cows from spring to fall in order to provide to them free and fresh food. It is impressive that this beautiful mountain, which one can walk from Saint Germanos village to Pisoderi village and Ski Resort, has so many different names; Varnouda, Peristeri (means pigeon in Greek), Bela Voda (means white water in Serbian), Gortsa Toumpa (means hill of wild pear trees), Toumpa (means hill in latin), and its greek peak Oryza, Garvani, Despotiko and Kitsevo.
Although Kallithea village is not included in the tourist destinations of Prespes, like Saint German, Saint Achilles and Psarades, it preserves its traditional character. There are many old cobblestone houses, settled or abandoned, that follow the distinctive domestic architecture of this area. And, except from the nice view to the lakes, Kallithea village is surrounded by beautiful slopes and streams of white waters.
