“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that
within me, there lay an invincible summer“
– Albert Camus
The Zante island has this extraordinary fame of a beautiful holiday destination, completely justified for one who lives or has been there. All the beaches of the island are upper to mediocre and waters are so clean and transparent that you think you swim in the best pool of the world. It’s not a coincidence that the Caretta caretta loggerhead turtles choose to nest and leave their eggs in one of its seashores.
Yet, I was surprised to find out that the general opinion for this beautiful Greek island hasn’t slightly changed the last two centuries, or even more. I found a description in a novel book of 1797 that it’s like someone talking about Zante nowadays: “Never before had he tasted anything equal to the delicious flavor of the fruits of this island… In the charming island of Zante Nature conspired against chastity – making the very air breathe nothing but transport and delight”.
Definitely, a destination to visit twice or more, if not to choose to live there forever.
